How to Read British-Metric Graduation?


British-Metric graduation is one of the most common tape in steel tape meausre. It rugularly consist of fractional scale and decimal scale based on metric measurements system(millimeters, centimeters, meters).


The top row numbers are imperial measurements, which have graduation based on fraction, such as 1/2", 1/4", 1/8" etc. While the bottom row numbers represent metric measurements, which have graduation based on the decimal system, for example 0.1, 0.01...


1": It is called inch as well. It is the longest vertical line, in length of half of a tape. Every large bold number sitting on the left of the longest vertical line represents an inch. Example: 1=1", 2=2", 3=3"
½": It is also named half. It is the second longest line. Example: ½=1/2"
¼": It is quarter as well. It is the third longest and also the third shortest line, which means a quarter inch. Example: ¼=1/4", ¾=3/4"
1/8": It is the second shortest line on the imperial measurements.Example: 1/8=1/8", 3/8=3/8", 5/8=5/8"
1/16": The shortest line on the imperial measurements.
